My Struggle 1
My Struggle Series
By Karl Ove Knausgård
The novel opens with a dizzying description of death. From there, it tells the story of author Karl Ove Knausgård’s struggle to master life, himself, and his own ambitions for writing, in the face of the people around him. *My Struggle. Book One* explores growing up and being handed over to a world that seems complete, finished, closed. The novel captures the sensitivity and uncertainty of the young gaze, as it registers the presence and judgments of others with a raw openness that is intense and nearly self-effacing in its consequence.
In a probing prose that seeks out the vulnerable, the embarrassing, and the existentially meaningful, this becomes a deeply personal novel, self-examining and controversial. One existential turning point is the death of the father; another is perhaps the protagonist’s debut as a writer.
