The fifth volume of the autobiographical novel *My Struggle* is written with immense power and sincerity. Karl Ove moves to Bergen to attend the Writing Academy. It turns out to be a huge disappointment; he wants so much, understands so little, and achieves nothing. Yet with seemingly baseless perseverance, he continues to write and read. Several of those he knows get accepted and debut as authors, and he starts to think that at best he might become a competent literary writer—but not an artist. Gradually, his writing changes. His relationship with the world around him changes too. This becomes a novel about new, strong friendships and a serious, tumultuous romantic relationship—until the novel once again reaches the existential turning point that may be the driving force behind the entire series: his father dies, Karl Ove debuts as an author, and everything falls apart. Karl Ove Knausgård’s third novel represents an enormous literary undertaking and is a major work in more than one sense: *My Struggle* is published as six novels. The first, second, third, and fourth books have been released, and the sixth will be published in the fall of 2010.
